Problem Statement

Lead time for modified product was unacceptable to the customer for a commercial manufacturer. At one point, one customer made the comment to a company representative that the company did not have custom product lines. That customer worked with competitors when custom and modified product was needed.

Solution

An improvement team was gathered to improve the cycle time of custom and modified orders. Process Maps were developed that illustrated the process from order receipt to delivery to the customer so that improvements to the process could be made. New procedures were developed for processing orders through the area. During this time period, Lead Times on orders for custom product was decreased from 8 weeks to 4 weeks while improving schedule adherence from 50% to 90%. This resulted in increased customer satisfaction and improved sales.
