Case Study 4

Problem Statement

The errant flight of a round from an ammunition manufacturer caused a complete shutdown in production and launched a major failure investigation.

Part of the failure analysis included a Designed Experiment utilizing Taguchi techniques to analyze the significance of 7 factors in contributing to the response of the ammunition. Two factors were found to have a significant interaction that most likely caused the errant flight. The problem was resolved with a redesign of the factors and the possibility of the interaction was eliminated. Production was restarted shortly after the results of the experiment were presented to the customer.
